The revenues streams coming from the TV rights deals that football clubs engage into are still one of the most important income channels for almost everyone out there. Each league has its own specific rules and even though it can be discussed the fairness of one particular league relative to another, it’s usually something which clubs have extreme difficulties in negotiating any changes.
In a recent study published by Deloitte, we can’t really say it struck us as a surprise to see Spanish (La Liga) and Italian clubs (Serie A) on the top spots of this football TV right deals rankings. Unlike the Bundesliga and the English Premier League, in Spain and Italy the TV right deals are not being distributed on anything near to an equal basis, since they mainly focus on rewarding the best performing clubs (which is, invariably, a small list of clubs).
Antagonistically, the English Premier League consists on a system that strives to improve the competitiveness of the league. The current agreement states that 50% of the overall TV rights revenue package should be distributed equally among all the 20 football clubs competing in the league, while 25% will be allocated depending on the standings each club gets at the end of the season, and the final 25% are delivered according to the amount of games each club gets broadcasted live on TV.
The ranking is led by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, and has Juventus and AC Milan following them in 3rd and 4th spots respectively. The English clubs only start appearing from the 5th place onwards, where Manchester United shows up very close to its Premier League long-time rivals Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City. The list is completed with Germany‘s powerhouse Bayern Munich (Bundesliga) in 9th place and the only representative from the French League (Ligue 1), Paris-Saint Germain.
