Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, has announced the purchase of the American newspaper The Washington Post for $ 250 million. The deal includes all the papers and their respective brand websites, including periodicals as Express, The Gazette and some minor newspapers. Just the Slate, Foreign Policy and TheRoot left out.
It is a historical movement: the purchase of one of the most traditional newspapers in the United States by a pioneering virtual retail. According to experts, the acquisition it is another step in Amazon efforts to produce content, started recently with the publication itself of virtual books and the possibility of the authors to bring their works to the online store.
At first, the staff will not be changed. The director of The Washington Post, Katharine Weymouth, will continue in her post and answer back to Bezos. And among the terms of the sale are keeping wages and benefits of all employees for at least one year in order to ensure a safe transition to all involved in the company’s business.
